Born on February 6, 1748, he lost his father at the age of five. Baron Johann Adam von Ickstatt became his mentor and sent him to the Jesuit college in Ingolstadt in 1755. He quickly proved himself as a gifted student with a strong interest in classical literature.
While his early education was shaped by Jesuit teachings, he later rejected parts of their interpretation, particularly those influenced by classical authors such as Cicero. At fifteen, he began formal studies in law, political science, history, and philosophy. As a professor and director of the University of Ingolstadt, Ickstatt granted him access to books banned by theological authorities. Through these works, he encountered French Enlightenment thinkers who would strongly influence his intellectual development.
